Breathing room

New AAU space to house library, offices and a second computer lab

By Nicol Schusterová

Anglo-American University will get badly needed growing room this fall.

The additional rental space, at Lázeňská 6, is part of the Knights of Malta embassy complex on the south side of the Church of Our Lady Under the Chain. AAU is already renting part of the Knights of Malta building at Lazenska 4 on the northern side of the church. The additional space will house university facilities including a computer lab and a library, according to Petr Pajas, AAU's vice president for administration.

The AAU registration office as well as classrooms and faculty offices also will be located in the embassy building.

Books presently stored at Na Jetelce will now be kept on the main campus, Pajas said. Students now have a waiting period for most library books, while the materials are transported across town, but the new accommodations will make the AAU library much more accessible.

The present computer lab in the Lazenska building will be moved to the Lázeňská space where it will be available for every-day student use. The Lazenska lab will become a classroom with Internet access, allowing instruction that takes advantage of the latest technology for academic use.

Pajas said the move will begin toward the end of December, and should be ready for use by the start of the Winter Semester.

AAU will enjoy a 40 percent increase of its available space once the move is complete, occupying more than three floors of the embassy building, Pajas said.

The university won't be getting a canteen, or cafeteria, just now, said Pajas, explaining that the school lacks the legal authority to offer that service. However, Mitchell Young, vice president for academic affairs, said the school expects to provide some space for students to "hang out and be around." Having a place to sit down and eat will help "create the campus feeling," he said.

The school plans an opening ceremony sometime around Christmas.
